Makanda, Ill. - Saluki freshman Briley Bergen won the only intercollegiate 5K open water swim in the country in 41.59 on Saturday morning against Kansas at Little Grassy Lake at Camp One on the northern edge of Giant City State Park in Makanda, Ill.
Despite Bergen's finish the Salukis lost the event due to the Jayhawks top six swimmers finishing second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth to win 31-59 on a cross country scoring system placing the top six finishers from each team.
"I was excited that Briley (Bergen) won and Liz McGowan finished fifth. Even though this is more of a fun meet than a competition, these kids are competitors and they raced hard. This will help us don't the road this season. After swimming this distance the pool workouts will be easier. I'm proud that basically our whole team swam this year," said Jeff Goelz, head women's swimming and diving coach.
The six point scorers for SIU were: Bergen, McGowan (5th-42.30), Ashley MacCurdy (8th-43.30), Andri Hadjiantoniou (14th), Brigitta Olson (15th) and Amber Mullins (16th). Kansas was led Gwen Haley (2nd-42.80), Sarah Ross (3rd-42.10), Andrea Becker (4th-42.11), Gina Gnatzig (6th-42.50), Beth Schryer (7th-43.15) and Alyson Colver (9th). The Jayhawks also placed swimmers tenth through thirteenth to push the SIU total higher.
Points are determined by place with first receiving one point, second earning two points, etc. The low total of the top six swimmers from each team wins the event.
SIU's next meet will be on October 26 at the Fall Illini Classic at the University of Illinois in Champaign.
