SPRINGFIELD, MO. - In the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships the Salukis came away with three championships. The Salukis were led by senior Tana Trapani as she went on to win the Flight Four Singles and Flight Two Doubles titles.
Trapani defeated Ala Alvarez of Southwest Missouri State in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-0, to claim the Flight Four singles title. Trapani was able to come away with another championship as she teamed up with doubles partner, senior Alejandra Blanco, to defeat a tough duo from SMS, 8-5, to take home the Flight Two Doubles crown.
Along with Trapani and Blanco, sophomore Zuzana Palovic also came away with a championship. Palovic defeated Ashley Maxwell of Illinois State in a close match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to win the Flight Six Singles Championship. Palovic and teammate, sophomore Zoya Honarmand, competed in the semifinal in Flight Three doubles, but came up short as they were defeated by Illinois State's Bingier and Sechaud, 8-4.
Due to the weather conditions, the back draw of tournament play was cancelled on Sunday and only the championship matches were played. SIU will host its annual Saluki Invitational next weekend, Oct. 10-11. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
