Women's Tennis Downs Evansville In First Conference Match

Evansville, Ind. - The women's tennis team defeated Evansville, 6-1, in its first Missouri Valley Conference matchup of the spring season. Winning seven of the nine matches, SIU starts the conference season off 1-0, with an overall record of 3-10 on the season.
The Salukis started the match off by winning the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. SIU freshmen players took center stage as Maria Blanco and Sophie Bedard defeated Jessica Jetton and Brooke Hoener, 8-6, while Zuzana Palovic and Zoya Honarmand knocked off Jessica Schwartz and Charly Kraft, 8-2.
SIU dominated singles competition by winning 5 of 6 matches. Junior Alejandra Blanco and Maria Blanco easily won at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Junior Jessica Knitter won her seventh singles match of the spring by defeating Erica Baas, 7-5, 6-4.
Sophie Bedard got her first win of the season at the No. 5 spot, while Zoya Honarmand destroyed her opponent, Charly Kraft, 6-0, 6-0, to win her fifth win of the season. Singles action saw only one loss in a tough match at the No. 4 spot. Zuzana Palovic took Liz Hedde to the brink of defeat before falling 5-7, 6-4, 15-13.
