EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois University men and women's swimming and diving teams dominated Evansville in the first dual meet of the season Saturday at the Carson Center in Evansville, Ind.
Each team won all 13 individual events, the women won192-49, and the men dominated as well, 182.5-53.5. Head coach Rick Walker recorded his first victory as the SIU women's head coach.
"All the athletes stepped up and approached it (the meet) with the right frame of mind and that's a great place to be at this time of year," said Walker. When asked about how it felt coaching both teams he said, "I loved it. I'm a little more drained then usual. Swim coaches swim every race with their swimmers, I'm just thrilled to be where I am."
Multiple event champions for the women included Nora Bunford (200 medley relay-1:52.58, 200 breast-2:23.50), Gabriela Flores (200 free relay1:41.47, 200 medley relay), Kelsey Kinsella (200 free-1:56.07, 100 free-53.54, 200 free relay), Nadine Shawah (one-238.425 and three-238.5 meter dives), Rachel Green (50 free-25.55, 200 free relay) and Katie Lowry (500 free-5:12.80, 200 free relay).
On the men's side, Marcelo Possato (200 medley relay-1:36.30, 200 back-1:49.69), Miguel King (200 medley relay, 200 breast-2:09.24), Case Gasparovich (200 medley relay, 50 free-21.94), Jason Sigler (1000 free-9:47.48, 500 free-4:47.25), Brandon Birchak (one-266.325 and three-242.25 meter dives), and Antonio Santoro (200 free-1:42.98, 100 free-:48.31, 200 free relay-1:26.78) were multiple event champions.
Freshmen Lowry and Santoro won their first collegiate races of their careers.
"We found some areas we can work on, and that is what we needed at this meet," said Walker. "I'm really pleased with the effort from both teams."
The women take on Nebraska at home Oct. 23, while the men have the weekend off before both teams take on Missouri in a dual meet Nov. 6 in Columbia, Mo.
