Women's Tennis Nips Syracuse, 4-3

ORLANDO, Fla. - The women's tennis team moved within one win of reaching their goal of giving Judy Auld her 400th victory as head coach at Southern Illinois University as the Salukis defeated Syracuse, 4-3, on Thursday. The win capped off a spring break trip to Florida, where SIU won two of three matches, improving its record to 5-3 this spring.
Auld, who is the second-winningest women's coach at SIU with 399 victories, came into the match with Syracuse unsure of how well her team would do, considering that last year's squad fell the Orangewomen by a score of 6-1 in Fort Lauderdale.
The strength of the lineup fell in the middle against the Orangewomen with SIU grabbing wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots during singles competition. Senior Jessica Knitter posted her third win of the season at No. 3, defeating Jessica Schlosser in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Fellow senior Tana Trapani won her sixth match of the spring, as well as her 15th of the year. Trapani had little trouble with Wei-Ming Leong, winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Sophomore Zoya Honarmand grabbed the Salukis third singles win at the No. 5 spot, topping Saverino, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, Knitter and sophomore Maria Blanco won at the No. 1 position against Trine Lise Juliussen and Leong, 8-5. Senior Alejandra Blanco and Trapani continued their team success, winning their fifth of the season and 33rd of their careers. The duo beat Ashley Lipton and Saverino, 8-0, at the No. 2 spot.
SIU hits the road once again, with hopes of snagging Auld's 400th win, as they match up with Murray State, Memphis and Arkansas-Little Rock next weekend, March 19-20, in Memphis, Tenn. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
