CARBONDALE, Ill. - The women's tennis team started off their weekend with a tough 5-2 loss to the Drake Bulldogs today at the SIU Arena Tennis Courts. With the loss the Salukis drop to 3-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play.
After dropping the doubles point at the begging of the match the Salukis looked to the Blanco sisters to lead the Dawgs at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spot. Senior Alejandra Blanco played a hard fought match at the No. 1 singles spot, but unfortunately was defeated by Drake's Amali de Bruyn 6-1, 7-5. Junior Maria Blanco had similar luck in her match up with DU's Zorana Stefanovi as Stefanovi handed Blanco a 6-2, 7-4 loss at the No. 2 singles spot.
While the Salukis dropped the match sophomore Zoya Honarmand and senior Natalie Crothers were able to come away with victories as the No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots. Honarmand picked up her 15 win of the season as she defeated Rebekah Thomas at the No. 4 spot while Crothers picked up her first MVC win with her victory over Julie Felsecker.
The Salukis will look to get back to .500 in MVC play tomorrow as they will welcome the Panthers from Northern Iowa to the SIU Arena Tennis Courts. The match will begin at 10:00 a.m.
