SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Southern Illinois women's basketball team came back from a 12-point deficit to pull ahead by two with 9:32 left to play before San Francisco went on a 12 to three run to walk away with the victory, 67-60, in the first round of the odwalla Classic Friday night, hosted by the Dons.
The Salukis (1-3) trailed 29-18 at halftime, held scoreless by the Dons (2-3) the final 4:37 of the half.
USF held the Salukis off at the start of the second half, ahead 40-28 with just under 15 minutes to go in the game.
SIU then went on a 12 to two run, finished off by two Carlai Moore free throws at 9:58, tying the game 44-44.
Another USF foul and two Debbie Burris free throws put the Salukis up 44-42, but the Dons would force a foul and shoot two for the 46-44 lead. Burris would force one more foul at the Salukis' end of the court and drain two more free throws to tie the game one more time at 46-46, but that was as close as the game would get.
Including four free throws, SIU shot the ball six times in the final five minutes of the game. The Salukis also produced four key turnovers, helping the Dons secure the seven-point victory.
San Francisco put three players in double-digits including a game-high 24 points, six boards from Dominique Carter, a two-time First-Team All-West Coast Conference performer. Lisa Olden chipped in 13, while Nickie Warren added 11.
Moore led the Salukis with 14 points before fouling out with three minutes left in the game. Burris added 11 points, three for four from the field and a perfect four for four from the line.
Dana Olsen led all players off the bench for nine points and a team-high five boards.
For the first time this season, the Salukis shot worse than their opponents, 48.8 percent from the field to the Dons' 51.1.
Southern, struggling from the free throw line this season, was 16 of 18, 88.9 percent for the game, a season-best mark.
The Salukis will face No. 20/24 Kentucky Saturday in the consolation game of the odwalla Classic at 7 p.m. CT. The Wildcats fell to Delaware Friday in the opening round of play.
