CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team will head into the 2006 State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Women's Tennis Championship as the ninth seed. The Salukis finished conference play with a 1-8 record.
SIU will face the #8 seeded host Creighton at 9 a.m. on Friday, at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb. When the two teams met earlier this season the Bluejays got the best of the Salukis winning the match 6-1.
"We believe we match-up well against Creighton," Saluki women's tennis coach Rene Vidal said. "All of the singles matches were close the last we played them, and our doubles line-up is back to the way it was at the beginning of the season. We look forward to the challenge of playing them on their home courts."
The Salukis are led by senior Maria Blanco who was selected to the 2006 MVC Singles All-Select Team announced earlier today by the league office. Blanco was voted to the six member team by the conference coaches through an at-large process regardless of flight. Blanco finished the season strong, winning four of her last six singles matches.
In their final match of regular season, the Salukis defeated Bradley 4-3 to earn their first conference victory.
"The win against Bradley is a solid confidence booster heading into the tournament," Vidal said. "It was excellent preparation for our match-up with Creighton."
