Women's tennis season ends with 4-2 loss

OMAHA, Neb. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team ends their season with a 4-2 loss to Creighton in the opening round of the 2006 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Creighton opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the number one and three pairs. Katie Chiu and Jen Burge won 8-5 over Maria Blanco and Zuzana Palovic at number one doubles, while Laura Bredniak and Kathleen Maher lost 8-3 to the Bluejays at number three doubles. The number two match went unfinished.
In singles play Creighton went up 3-1 after wins by Burge at number three singles and Chiu at the number one singles slot. Burge defeated Zoya Honarmand 6-3, 6-0 while Chiu defeated Blanco 6-4, 6-3. The Salukis put a point on the board when Amanda Taillefer won the number four match over Lou Hurley 6-0, 6-2.
Southern Illinois closed to within one point at 3-2, when Zuzana Palovic rallied to defeat Nicole Thurston 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the number two match.
Creighton clinched the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Maher in the number six match.
The number five singles match went unfinished.
Southern Illinois ends the season with an overall record 4-15. With the win, Creighton improved to 11-10 and a quarterfinal match-up with top-seeded Wichita State later today.
