MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Salukis began play Friday at the Lady Tiger Invitational in Memphis, Tenn. Weather played a factor in today's action, moving all matches indoors.
In flight one singles, Sabine Tsala Mvilongo fell in her first match against Amy Anstey of Tennessee Tech 7-6, 4-6, 7-10. Tsala got a bye to compete in the semi-final consolation round. Michela Cruise also played in flight one singles, getting a bye in the first round, moving on to win her second round match against Western Kentucky's Erin Fulkerson 6-4, 6-4. Jessica Flannery also competed in flight two winning her first match against Anne Weijenborg of Arkansas- Little Rock 6-3, 6-4. She then moved on to defeat Lyndsay Ottosen of Murray State 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Flannery will compete in the Semi-Finals on Saturday.
Agata Skorupska competed in flight three singles defeating Allison Oberle of Western Kentucky 6-1, 6-0 in the first round, then in the second round fell to Ball State's Jennifer Pollack 2-6, 2-6. Anne Tilton won her first round match in Flight four against Lauren Williams of Lipscomb 6-2, 6-2. Tilton then fell in the second round to Ball State's Emma Retter 0-6, 0-6.
"Were getting more confident in singles," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We've been struck with injury and illness. But despite the bad timing, we're doing well. The girls are playing strong and confident. The matches were moved indoors due to weather, which we were not expecting, but adjusted to very nicely."
Cruise and Ce teamed up in flight one doubles winning their first round against Ball State's Haly Calderwood and Jennifer Pollack 9-8. They played strong, but fell in the Quarterfinals to Murray State's Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington 6-8. Flannery and Tsala also teamed up against Arkansas-Little Rock's Latetitia Bourgeon and Marta Gomez-Jordana 6-8.
Tilton filled in for Andrea Cortney, who could not compete due to illness. Teaming up in flight two doubles, Tilton and Taillefer played a strong match against Carolina Pachon of Tennessee Tech and Katelyn Fulcher of Murray State, but fell 6-8.
"Anne and Amanda did well for just being thrown together," said Nothwehr. "Doubles wise, we're doing better serving wise and returning, but need to be more aggressive at the net. That's something we've been working on all semester, and I can see it's getting better."
The Salukis will continue action Saturday morning in Memphis, Tenn.
