CARY, N.C. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team defeated UNC Wilmington today by a score of 4-3 at the Cary (N.C.) Tennis Center.
With the victory over the Seahawks (11-7), SIU improved their season record to 5-4.
The Salukis started out strong in doubles, winning two of three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Ame Blacketer and Jessica Flannery represented SIU well on court one with an 8-5 victory over Lauren Isenhour and Kayla Schwenk. Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Agata Skorupska clinched the doubles point with their court three victory over Cassie Martin and Hartley Collins, 9-8.
SIU and UNCW battled on the singles courts, splitting the six matches. SIU won the first two matches with Tsala Mvilongo's 7-6 (5), 6-2 win on court one and Blacketer's 7-6 (7), 6-3 victory in court two.
UNCW won the singles matches on courts three, four and five before Amanda Taillefer captured a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Hartley Collins on court six to wrap up the Salukis' 4-3 win.
SIU will take a week off before opening up Missouri Valley Conference play in Evansville. The Salukis will travel to face the Purple Aces at 1 p.m. next Friday.
