Women's Tennis Battles for Win over Huskies

CARBONDALE, Ill. - After being forced to move their match inside due to rain, the Southern Illinois women's tennis team won a close match over the Huskies of Northern Illinois, 4-3.
The match began at noon at SIU's University Courts where the Salukis dropped two of three doubles matches to fall behind 1-0. Ame Blacketer and Jessica Flannery picked up the Salukis' only doubles win in No. 1 action with an 8-5 win over Megan Brooks and Brooke Forsgerg.
"I am extremely proud of our team," said head coach Rene Vidal. "We demonstrated incredible character under difficult conditions today. After dropping the doubles point we stuck together as a team and competed extremely hard."
Singles play began on the outdoor courts, but rain forced the match to be moved inside. When play resumed at Sports Blasts' indoor facility the Salukis battled back to tie the match at three-all.
First, Sabine Tsala Mvilongo defeated Lilian Asuaje, 6-4, 6-2. Blacketer fell to Jenny Edner, 6-3, 6-3. Agata Skorupska got a win in No. 3 singles play over Nao Umemura, 6-3, 6-3.
Flannery dropped her match in No. 4 action to Forsberg, 6-3, 6-2. Amanda Taillefer dropped Brooks, 6-3, 6-2, tying the match at 3-3.
With the match tied, the outcome of the day came down to Martina Vianna Ce and Doris Delgadillo in No. 5 singles. The two split the first two sets, Vianna Ce taking the first at 6-3 and Delgadillo winning the second 6-4. The third and match-deciding set went to Vianna Ce, 6-4, giving the Salukis a 4-3 victory.
With the win, the SIU improves to 8-4, 1-0 on the season.
The Salukis will be back in action on Monday when they host the Tigers of Memphis at 3 p.m. at the campus University Courts.
