CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team picked up its fifth-straight match victory today, beating the Memphis Tigers 5-2.
The Salukis got off to a great start when they swept all three of the doubles matched to jump out to a 1-0 lead overall.
Jessica Flannery and Ame Blacketer battled for an 8-7 victory over Ekin Zafir and Dara Toulch in No. 1 doubles. Amanda Taillefer and Martina Vianna Ce teamed up to knock off Christina Wieser and Amanda Brown in No. 2 doubles action, 8-3.
Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Agata Skorupska had no problem dispatching Flavia Russo and Katie-Mary Outhwaite 8-1 in No, 3 doubles.
The Salukis continued to roll through singles, winning four of the six matches. Tsala Mvilongo beat Zafir in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Flannery knocked off Brown, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 4 singles action.
Vianna Ce shut down Russo in No. 5 play, 6-0, 6-2. Michela Cruise swept past Outhwaite 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 action.
Blacketer was forced to retire from her match at No. 2 due to shoulder pain in the second set. Skorupska struggled in No. 3 play, dropping her match to Toulch 7-5, 6-3.
"We did a good job today of staying focused on the task at hand," said head coach Rene Vidal. "Memphis is an up and coming program and we are pleased with the win. We will get back to work on Wednesday in preparation for an extremely tough weekend."
The Salukis look to extend their winning streak this weekend when they host three Missouri Valley Conference opponents. SIU will take on Bradley at 3 p.m. in Friday, Indiana State at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Illinois State at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three matches will take place at SIU's University Courts.
