Salukis Win Weather-Shortened Match Over SEMO, 4-2

CARBONDALE, Ill. - After being forced inside by rain yesterday, the Southern Illinois women's tennis team picked up a win in a shortened match against Southeastern Missouri State.
The Salukis (11-6, 2-2 MVC) and the Redhawks (11-12, 5-64 OVC) made the decision to play singles first and play the doubles matches only if the doubles point was needed to decide the match.
With only three courts available at Sports Blast, the Salukis' indoor facility, the match got started with the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles matches.
Sabine Tsala Mvilongo defeated SEMO's top player in Bryce Krystal at No. 1 by a score of 6-2, 6-4. SEMO tied the match when Drew Krystal beat Ame Blacketer at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. The Salukis then fell behind when Agata Skorupska dropped her match at No. 3 o Julia Masotti by a count of 6-3, 6-4.
The Salukis stormed back, winning the final three singles matches to claim the 4-2 match victory.
At No. 6 Martina Vianna Ce easily dispatched Kimmy Anderson, 6-0, 6-1. Michela Cruise put the Salukis back in the lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Luz Garcia in No. 5 action. Jessica Flannery clinched the victory for the Salukis and prevented the need for the doubles point with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Elise Nattier at No. 4.
SIU head coach Rene Vidal was pleased with his team's play and pointed to two matches as keys to the victory.
"Sabine's win was key in keeping the dual match score close," said Vidal. "Jessica did an excellent job of closing out the match for the team."
The Salukis will travel to Iowa this weekend to face two Missouri Valley Conference opponents. SIU will face Northern Iowa (13-4, 2-1 MVC) on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Cedar Falls and Drake (6-11, 1-2 MVC) on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Des Moines.
