CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team defeated conference opponent Creighton (8-10, 1-6 MVC) today, 5-2.
The Salukis (12-8, 3-4 MVC) began the day on the doubles' courts where they won two of three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Michela Cruise and Martina Vianna Ce paired up to take down Nicole Thurston and Lindsey Erickson at No. 2, 8-4. Sabine Tsala Mvilongo and Agata Skorupska beat Jodi Yanagida and Cassie Yoneshige at No. 3, 8-4, to clinch the doubles' point.
The Salukis continued to dominate in singles, winning four of six singles matches to collect the 5-2 victory.
Skorupska won at No. 2 with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 total against Thurston. Cruise picked up a win over Erickson at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1. Vianna Ce rolled over Yanagida, 6-0, 6-1. Amanda Taillefer defeated Yoneshige, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6.
"Creighton is always a tough opponent and we are happy with the win," said head coach Rene Vidal. "We look forward to the challenge of competing tomorrow against one of the best teams in the country."
The Salukis will be back in action tomorrow when they host their final home match of the season against No. 34 Wichita State (22-2, 7-0 MVC) at 10 a.m.
