Distance swimmers tested at SIU Miler

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Swimming & Diving hosted a 1650 Free Invitational at the Dr. Edward J. Shea Natatorium Friday night.
Swimmers from SIU and Illinois State competed in the event.
On the women's side, SIU freshman Kirsten Groome (Shreveport, La.) finished first of 18 total particpants with a time of 16:24.12.
Teammate Jennifer Kwok (Bowling Green, Ky.) clocked in close behind at 17:38.86.
Jill Weckbach and Keli Kramer rounded out the lineup for the Saluki women, finishing at 18:39.90 and 18:48.90, respectively.
Matt Parsons finished first out of four Salukis on the men's side with a time of 16:23.28, while Cesar Perez finished second at 16:41.46. Newcomer Barrett Mark swam 17:00.79 and David Welker wrapped up competition for SIU at 18:04.46.
Southern Illinois will continue to prepare for the 2009-10 season, building long distance endurance at the SIU 3k Open Water Festival Saturday morning. The event will be held at Little Grassy Lake in Marion, Ill. and is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
