Salukis sweep competition at SIU Open Water Festival

MARION, Ill. -The distance swimmers of Southern Illinois continued to impress this weekend as the men's and women's teams both notched first place finishes at the 5k Open Water Festival held at Grassy Lake in Marion.
Teams were comprised of three swimmers each from the participating schools - University of Evansville, Illinois State University, University of Missouri, and SIU.
In the men's race, the team of Matt Parsons, Matt Kruse, and Barrett Mark combined for a first place finish for the Salukis. The trio accounted for the top three times overall out of 19. Parsons and Kruse swam 59:15.00 and 59:17.00, while Mark finished at 59:52.00.
The SIU women's team of Kirsten Groome, Jennifer Kwok, and Keli Kramer tied for first with Mizzou in the nine-team race with a time of 189.82.
Groome has stood out from the competition in her collegiate debut this weekend. The freshman placed first overall in the 5k out of 31, swimming 59.32, adding to her first place finish in the 1650 free at the SIU Miler Friday night.
Kwok and Kramer both finished in the top 15 with times of 64.48 and 66.02 to help the Salukis capture their second victory of the day.
After a weekend of distance competition, SIU Swimming & Diving will travel to Evansville on Wednesday, Oct. 7 for its first dual meet of the 2009-10 season. The meet is scheduled to being at 5 p.m. at Wyttenbach Pool.
