RICHMOND, Ky. - Despite strong showings from Vishakha Sheoran and Martina Vianna Ce, the SIU women's tennis team struggled against #68 Marshall en route to a 7-0 loss Friday in Richmond Ky.
Sheoran fell behind early to Dominica Zaprazna in #2 singles, dropping the first set. However, the sophomore pushed Zaprazna to tiebreakers in the second set before falling 6-2, 7-6 (5).
In #7 singles, Vianna Ce opened in a similar manner, dropping the opening set to the Thundering Herd's Kristina Koprcina. However, the Brazilian - much like her teammate - pushed her opponent to tiebreakers before being narrowly topped 6-2, 7-6 (7).
However, the other four singles matches were not as promising, as the Saluki women won a combined four games in those matches.
"The surface we played on was a little faster than what we are used to and some of our players adjusted better than others to this," said Head Coach Audra Nothwehr. "Vishakha and Martina really made nice adjustments in their games in the second sets."
In doubles action, the duo of Jennifer Dien and Jessica Flannery trailed Thaddea Lock and Catherine Kellner by a 6-0 margin early. However, Dien and Flannery battled back, only to fall in dramatic fashion, 8-6.
"Marshall has a tough team," Nothwehr said. "Being our first match of the year, we are still getting the kinks out of our games."
The Salukis will look to get their first win of the young season tomorrow, when they face Eastern Kentucky at 9 a.m. Afterward, Southern will make the journey northwest to Louisville, where they are set to take on the Cardinals of Louisville at 4 p.m.
