CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Salukis used stellar performances in the lower singles positions to cruise past the Murray State Racers, 5-2, Tuesday in Carbondale, Ill.
The win marks head coach Audra Nothwehr's 100th career victory in women's tennis.
With the Salukis leading 3-2 late, senior Martina Vianna Ce clinched the match for Southern with a hard fought 7-6 (6-4), 6-3 triumph over Lindsey Wiseman.
Emily Whitney and Jennifer Dien both turned in dominating matches in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Whitney rolled to a quick victory, downing Murray State's Alexis Webb 6-1, 6-1. Meanwhile, Dien also made quick work of her opponent, stifling Ashley Canty 6-1, 6-2.
Arguably the most dramatic match of the day was between Jessica Flannery and Lyndsay Ottosen in No. 6 singles. Flannery was quickly defeated in the first set, but to make matters worse, the senior was hobbled by an upper leg injury. However, the Ohioan pulled through with a gutsy performance to rally and win the match 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The Salukis began the match by taking the doubles point - their fourth straight match doing so. Recording wins were Melanie Delsart and Vianna Ce in No. 2 doubles and Flannery and Dien in third doubles.
"I'm really proud of how we played today," Nothwehr said. "Doubles and singles were solid and every singles player battled hard and fought until the end. We did have a few ailments on the team, but that didn't slow us down at all."
The Dawgs will hit the courts again Friday to face the Morehead State Eagles in a men's/women's doubleheader. The men will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the women. The match will take place at University Courts, weather pending.
