CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team improved their home record to 6-0, downing Northern Illinois, 6-1, Saturday at the University Courts.
"It was nice to be back home," said Southern head coach Audra Nothwehr. "I think we are back on with doubles. We were very solid today. It was nice to get a win against a rival in Northern today."
The Dawgs captured five of the six singles matches on the day, winning each of them in straight sets, while also nabbing the doubles point in the win.
Melanie Delsart easily won her match in top singles, defeating Kathryn Friedlund 6-2, 6-1. The win was her third straight and fourth in the last five matches for the Argentinian. Delsart also captured a win in doubles with Martina Vianna Ce, as they won against Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers, 8-4.
Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Jennifer Dien also won her third straight match and improved her record to 8-3 on the year. Dien topped Sara McLaughlin 6-3, 6-4, in No. 4 singles.
Also capturing wins in singles were Vishakha Sheoran, Michela Cruise, and Vianna Ce. Sheoran defeated NIU's Rogers 6-1, 6-3, in No. 2 singles, Cruise toppled Martina Schnapp in sixth singles 6-3, 6-0, and Vianna Ce breezed past Kelly Phillips 6-4, 6-2.
Southern began the match on a good note by winning the doubles point. Sheoran and Anastacia Simons, who had not won in doubles since Feb. 14, ended their drought to clinch the point against the Huskies' Phillips and Stephanie Okuma, 8-4.
The Salukis will hit the courts again Wednesday, when they host the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State at the University Courts at 3 p.m.
