CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team opened their Missouri Valley Conference schedule with a resounding win, defeating the Evansville Aces, 6-1, Friday at the University Courts.
The win also gave the women's tennis program their fourth straight season of double-digit wins, while extending their win streak to five.
"Evansville was a really good team coming in," said Saluki head coach Audra Nothwehr. "They had beaten Eastern Kentucky and played well against Austin Peay. Yet, the moment our girls walked onto the courts today, they were ready to play. I was amazed at their performances."
Freshman Melanie Delsart quite possibly landed the biggest win of her young career, toppling previously undefeated Kate Chybowski in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. The win was Delsart's fifth straight on the season - all in top singles.
Another freshman, Jennifer Dien, also captured her fifth straight singles win, besting Ashton Schwerin in a three set thriller 6-0, 6-7 (0-7), 10-7, in No. 3 singles. The Overland Park, Kan., native now holds a team-best 10-3 record on the season.
Martina Vianna Ce pulled through with a gutsy win in No. 4 singles against UE's Pin Sorensen 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). After taking the first set in convincing fashion, the senior was hobbled by leg cramps early in the second set. Vianna Ce fell behind 5-2, but came from behind to score four straight points and eventually the match clincher.
Also recording wins in singles were Emily Whitney at No. 2 and Michela Cruise at No. 6.
The Dawgs got off to a great start to the match, capturing the doubles point with wins in first and second doubles.
The Salukis will next be in action on April 3, when they travel to Peoria to battle the Bradley Braves at 1 p.m.
