CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team completed their three match homestand with a bang, as they defeated the Chicago State Cougars, 5-2, Saturday morning at the University Courts.
The win not only puts Southern above .500 on the season, but it also extended the team's home winning streak to eight matches and 12 of their last 13.
"We played much better in doubles today than yesterday," said Saluki head coach Audra Nothwehr. "This Chicago State team is frustrating to play because they are all backboards, making you play a lot of balls. It can get frustrating, but we got the job done."
"Our team really plays well at home. We enjoy the crowd and it makes it even more special that the men are also out there competing at the same time, also cheering us on."
Freshman Jennifer Dien turned in a spectacular performance for the Dawgs, as she swept CSU's Peggy Moore 6-0, 6-0. The win puts the Overland Park, Kan., native on a three match win streak.
Jessica Flannery has also compiled an impressive streak of her own, extending her's to four with a win over Golda Rubina 6-2, 3-6, 10-2.
Notching the other singles win was Vishakha Sheoran, who broke her own slump in a dominant win against Dian Mayasari 6-3, 6-4. The match was also the sophomore's first in top singles in her short career.
"I was especially proud to see Vishakha bounce back from yesterday's losses and today's close doubles loss and play a solid singles match," Nothwehr said.
In doubles, Martina Vianna Ce and Melanie Delsart handled Lia Tejoprayitno and Lina Tejoprayitno, 8-4. Southern was able to clinch the doubles point with a forfeit in third doubles.
The Salukis women will now hit the road to New Orleans, La., for their annual spring break trip. Their first match will be Wednesday, when they take on the Tulane Green Wave at 2 p.m. in the Goldring Tennis Center.
