CARBONDALE, Ill.-Saluki women's tennis head coach Audra Nothwehr has announced the signing of two players - Aziza Butoyi and Anita Lee - for the 2010-11 season.
Butoyi is a native of the small African nation of Burundi and has been ranked as high as 417th in the world among International Tennis Federation juniors. In addition, she has posted victories over the 178th, 184th, and 411th-ranked juniors in her career and is the top-rated tennis player for the Africa Cup.
Butoyi also captured the Triple Crown at the 2010 Kenya Open, as she won titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In 2009, she was named the top female athlete at Sadili Oval Sports Academy.
"We are excited to have signed Aziza," Nothwehr said. "She has trained with Fadzai (Mawisire) and Anastacia (Simons) at the ITF Training Center in South Africa, and has a playing style very much like Fadzai. She is very clever with her strategy and is very strong mentally. She should see playing time at the top of our lineup."
Lee, who hails from Las Vegas, is the top-rated high school senior in Nevada and has helped lead Bishop Gorman High School to four consecutive team state championships from 2006 to 2009.
Individually, she won the state high school singles championship in 2007 and the doubles title in 2008.
"Anita has a spunky attitude and a very smart game," Nothwehr said. "She has a variety of talent that will help her be successful in both doubles and singles and will help take our SIU team to the next level."
Both players join Korey Love, a native of Port Orange, Fla., as members of the 2010 recruiting class.
