Women's Tennis rebounds against Creighton with first MVC win

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team avenged Saturday's loss to Wichita State by bouncing back with a solid 6-1 win over Creighton on Sunday to pick up its first Missouri Valley Conference victory of the season.
The Salukis' lineup was back at full strength for the doubles game, as Vishakha Sheoran came back to team up with Anita Lee for an 8-4 victory at the third spot. Melanie Delsart and Jennifer Dien traded points with Creighton's Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder at No. 1 before finally coming out on top 9-7 to claim the first point.
Korey Love was back on the court at No. 2 doubles with Anastacia Simons, as Love worked on returning from her injury playing half the match before defaulting.
Gusty winds did not have an effect on Southern's game, as it continued dominance in singles.
Sheoran came back in at the No. 5 spot to post a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Lauren Mastro, and Simons followed up with a straight-set victory of her own, defeating Mary McMullan 6-1, 6-4.
"It was great to see Vee (Vishakha) back out on the singles court and getting a solid win for us today," said head coach Audra Nothwehr.
Delsart improved to 9-8 this season at No. 1 singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kirshenbaum.
Dien battled at third singles, winning the third-set tiebreaker 10-7 after splitting the first two sets with Kelsey Schmidt, 6-3 and 2-6.
Lee closed out the victory for the Salukis with her 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2, evening her record to 7-7 on the year.
"It was really windy today and we knew we had to adjust our games to the wind," Nothwehr said. "I thought our players did a great job of staying composed in bad conditions."
With the win, Southern Illinois improves to 9-10 overall and 1-2 in the MVC. Creighton, finishing a three-match stretch over the span of three days, drops to 11-7 and 1-3 in the Valley.
SIU hits the road next weekend, continuing conference play at Northern Iowa Saturday at 1 p.m. and at Drake Sunday at 10 a.m.
