Women's Tennis uses strong singles play to defeat SIUE

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The third time was the charm for Southern Illinois on Wednesday, as the Salukis picked up a 5-2 victory at SIU-Edwardsville in a match that had already been rescheduled twice due to weather.
SIU (8-9, 0-1) had to shift its normal lineup due to an injury and was forced to default at third doubles. Melanie Delsart and Jennifer Dien cruised to an 8-2 victory at the top spot, but the new pair of Anastacia Simons and Anita Lee at No. 2 came up short, 8-4, allowing SIUE (5-9) to claim the doubles point.
Southern regained its composure in the singles game, winning all five of the matches it played, four of them in straight sets.
"We played solid singles today," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "We had to mix up our lineup a little bit because Korey (Love) was out today, but we adjusted well and picked up a key win."
Delsart and Lee held up the top of the lineup with strong victories of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 7-5, respectively. Dien got the job done in three at No. 3, picking up a three-set victory with a score of 4-6, 7-6, 10-3.
Simons netted her first victory at the fourth spot this season by a 6-0, 7-5 margin, and in her first appearance in the No. 5 slot, Vishakha Sheoran posted a solid 6-1, 6-2 win.
SIUE's only other point of the match came at the sixth spot as a result of a forfeit.
The Salukis return to conference play this weekend, hosting Wichita State Saturday at 1 p.m. and Creighton Sunday at 9 a.m.
