CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois battled at every singles position but came up shorthanded in a 7-0 loss against Wichita State Saturday afternoon.
Injuries continued to plague Southern (8-10, 0-2 MVC) as it was forced to compete two players down with Korey Love and Vishakha Sheoran out of the lineup, putting the Salukis at a disadvantage against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions.
"Wichita State was solid today," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Even though we only had four players, we fought them hard and we were in every match. I was really proud of our effort and focus."
The Shockers (8-7, 2-0 MVC) took the doubles point after picking up an 8-1 victory at No. 2 and winning by forfeit at the third spot, but Melanie Delsart and Jennifer Dien made a game of it at No. 1, pushing Wichita's Montse Blasco Fernandez and Lutfiana Budiharto before falling, 8-4.
All four singles matches were highly contested in the high heat of the afternoon. Dien and Anastacia Simons fell at No. 3 and 4 by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2.
Anita Lee continuously traded points with WSU's Raphaela Zotter but was unable to hang on, dropping her match at second singles by a 6-3, 6-4 margin.
The top singles match was the competition of the day with Delsart and Budiharto going head-to-head in what turned out to be a tight three sets. Delsart ran away with the first set, 6-1, but Budiharto came right back with her own 6-0 answer. The women went back and forth before Budiharto eventually broke away in the third and final set, winning 6-3 and sealing the shutout for the Shockers.
Southern Illinois looks to add strength to its lineup with the possible return of Love and Sheoran, as the Salukis continue MVC play when they take on Creighton Sunday at 9 a.m.
