Salukis Fall to Arkansas State, 6-1

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team fell at home to Arkansas State today 6-1.
The Salukis(3-1) started the afternoon match with Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien winning their doubles match (8-4) against the Red Wolves (5-2). Melanie Delsart and Korey Love fell at the No. 1 doubles position (5-8). Finishing off doubles play for Southern was Anita Lee and Anastacia Simons at the No. 3 position, who fell (9-8) in a tie breaker with their Arkansas State counterparts.
"They have very powerful players, and we couldn't just out-hit them," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "It was a tight match that could have went either way, we needed a tough match like this."
Dien, at the No. 3 singles position fell to Janie Nowland in two sets (6-3, 7-6), while Delsart at the No. 1 spot fell in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) to Mariana Rong. At the No. 2 position, Anita Lee fell in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) in a match that lasted two and a half hours. Ariadna Cairo Baza was the lone Saluki to record a singles victory today, defeating Ioana Teu (8-5).
The Salukis will be back in action on Sunday, when they host Northern Illinois at 10:00 a.m. at the Sportsblast.
