CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southern Illinois Saluki women's tennis team took care of business on the road today, dominating their regional rivals SEMO, 6-1.
The Salukis (6-1, 0-0) didn't take long to pounce on the Redhawks, (1-4, 0-0) and securing the doubles point by sweeping them. Southern won five of the six singles matches, on their way to a 6-1 win.
The Salukis are a combined 18-3 in doubles play this year. Junior Melanie Delsart and sophomore Korey Love defeated their counterparts at the No. 1 position (8-4), while twins Ariadna Cairo Baza, and Gisela Cairo Baza defeated Heather Robinson and Lauren Schaper of SEMO rather easily, (8-3). Southern was put to the test at the No. 2 position in doubles as Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima won their match in a tiebreaker (8-7, 7-2).
"We really battled the wind today, and SEMO was much better than in past years, so I am happy with how we played," said head coach Audra Nothwehr.
In singles play Southern dominated almost every match, none of which went to a third set. Jennifer Dien continues to have success at the No. 3 position winning her match today (6-3, 6-4) marking her third win in a row. Melanie Delsart won convincingly at the No. 1 position (6-3, 6-1). Junior Anastacia Simons continues to play well winning (6-1, 6-1), now 4-1 on the season.
The Salukis will be on the road for four more matches, next in Orlando, Fla. when they play NJIT at 9 a.m.
