CARBONDALE, Ill.- The Southern Illinois women's tennis team bounced back defeating Chicago State this afternoon, 6-1.
The Salukis (11-3, 1-0 MVC) picked up the doubles point by sweeping the Cougars (4-15). Freshman Gisela Cairo Baza and Ariadna Cairo Baza won their third match in a row at the No. 3 doubles position, 8-1.
"We were able to be more aggressive today since we play this team every year, we knew a lot of their players, and knew we could win," said head coach Audra Nothwehr. "Going into conference play I think we are ready, this weekend was a good test for us."
Southern came out and dominated the Cougars in singles play as well, winning five of six matches. Junior Melanie Delsart defeated Karyn Emaralda 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, winning her eighth match straight. Anita Lee defeated her opponent at the No. 3 position 6-3, 6-3.
"I am no playing at 100 percent physically, but I am playing better mentally than my opponents, and that is why I am winning," said Delsart.
The Salukis will be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on the Bluejays. The match is slated for a 11 a.m. start.
