CARBONDALE, Ill. --The Southern Illinois women's tennis team is set to host UT Martin at 3 p.m. Thursday at Sportsblast.
The Salukis (9-1) come into the match on a nine-match winning streak after defeating Florida Atlantic, Quinnipiac and Florida International last week. Southern is off to its best start in program history, surpassing its 6-1 start in 2003-04, while stringing together the longest winning streak (9) in program history.
The Skyhawks (2-8) come to Carbondale after defeating SIU Edwardsville over the weekend, 4-3. Anna Marie Herbold leads UT Martin with a 3-6 record at No. 2 singles. Jessica Silva and Anna Winklemann are leading the way in doubles play for the Skyhawks, winning their last four matches, each at the No. 3 spot.
The Salukis continue to have success in doubles play where they are a combined 51-14 (.755) on the year. Melanie Delsart and Anastacia Simons lead the way for the Salukis with a 21-2 record. Jennifer Dien and Natasha Tomishima are not far behind with a 15-4 record.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has ranked Southern Illinois senior Melanie Delsart No. 19 in the central region. This marks the second consecutive year she has received a central region ranking (No. 10 in 2011-12). Delsart joins players from Kansas State, Nebraska, Tulsa, Iowa and Missouri among the top 20 singles players in the region, and was one of two Missouri Valley Confer- ence players to be ranked in the top 20 regionally.
