Salukis down Drake, 4-2; Advance to MVC Championship Finals

WICHITA, Kans. -- The Southern Illinois women's tennis team defeated No. 3 seeded Drake 4-2 in the semifinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tennis Championship hosted by Wichita State.
The Salukis (19-4, 6-1 MVC) took the doubles point from the Drake (13-10, 5-2 MVC) after winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien bested Nelle Boyd and Evy Van Genechten 8-3 at No. 2 while Anita Lee and Korey Love downed Ali Patterson and Mariel Ante 8-1 at No. 3.
SIU went on to win three matches in singles action to pick up their 19th win of the season. Senior Melanie Delsart bested Klavdija Rebol (6-1, 6-2) at flight No. 1 while Tomishima picked up a two-set win at flight No. 2, defeating Genechten (6-0, 6-1).
Sophomore Ariadna Cairo Baza clinched the win for Southern for the second straight match. Cairo Baza defeated Boyd (7-5, 6-2) at the No. 4 spot, picking up her 18th win of the season.
The Salukis will take on top-seeded Wichita State in the finals of the MVC Championship tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Wichita.
