DES MOINES, Iowa - The women's tennis team travels to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the MVC Individual Championships this weekend. This tournament will be the first where SIU faces conference opponents this season.
Last year the Salukis brought home championship titles in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles as well as third place in No. 2 doubles, No. 6 singles and No. 7 singles.
"We've had a tradition of bringing home some titles pretty consistently in the past years, so I'm hoping we can continue that tradition and hopefully come home with one or two more than normal," head coach Audra Anderson said.
After a tough competition at Colorado University last week, the Salukis have experience under their belts and wins and losses to build upon. According to Anderson, doubles teams are stronger going into this weekend due to some changes made at the Colorado Invitational.
"We found that some intangibles like communication, energy and chemistry really make these doubles teams work," Anderson said. "We're really focusing on strategy, not messing with anyone's technique, just to make everyone more confident."
The MVC Individual Championships are being played at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center at Drake University. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., Friday through Sunday.
