JONESBORO, Ark. - The SIU women's tennis team closes out the fall season this weekend as the Salukis travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Red Wolf Invitational.
The Salukis have gone three weeks without a competition, after Meagan Monaghan, Natasha Tomishima, Ariadna Cairo Baza and Athena Chrysanthou competed at the ITA Central Regional tournament in October.
This weekend, the Salukis will be represented by SIU's No. 5 through No. 10 players, including senior Gisela Cairo Baza, sophomores Polina Dozortseva and Lauren Hoekstra, and freshmen Vitoria Beirao, Yana Golovkina and Hannah Wich.
"We've been putting in a lot of hard work over this break, and I think they've grown a lot, so they're looking a lot stronger," head coach Audra Anderson said.
The team will try new doubles combinations this weekend, including Dozortseva with Beirão and Cairo Baza with Golovkina.
"Polina and Vitoria are definitely a group to watch," Anderson said. "We're really excited about that combination. And Gisela and Yana, that team looks pretty good too."
SIU will compete against teams from Murray State, Southeast Missouri State, Missouri State, UT-Martin, Western Kentucky and host school Arkansas State.
The doubles and singles tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
