CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team picked up doubleheader wins over UT Marin and SEMO at Sports Blast on Sunday. The Salukis defeated the Skyhawks 5-2 while besting the Redhawks 4-3 to pick up its sixth straight win of the season. SIU (6-3) has been on fire of late and during its current homestand they are undefeated at 5-0.
"I think we had a really solid weekend," said head coach Audra Anderson. "I can see we are making progress, especially in doubles. I'm proud of the girls."
Junior Natasha Tomishima led the Salukis over the weekend with a combined 5-0 record in both doubles and singles action. Against UT Martin, Tomishima bested Ivon Semic 6-4, 6-3 before defeating Valeriia Kashina of SEMO 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the nightcap to pick up her fourth straight singles win. Tomishima and partner Meagan Monaghan took down a Skyhawk duo at the No. 1 doubles slot, 8-2.
Polina Dozortseva won each of her matches today. She started the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over UT Martin's Jessica Silva before clinching the win for the Salukis against SEMO with a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot.
Freshman Lauren Hoekstra picked a win over Katie McCall in the first match and Anita Lee won in convincing fashion against Erica Donetckova of SEMO, 6-0, 6-0. Monaghan picked up a win against UT Martin, defeating Hitomi Naito 6-3, 6-1.
Ariadna Cairo Baza and Dozortseva teamed up to win both of their doubles matches on the day. Against the Skyhawks, they won 8-5 and against SEMO the duo dominated their counterparts 8-2. Korey Love and Lee picked up a doubles win against SEMO at the No. 2 spot, 8-2.
Southern will be back in action Mar. 1 when they play host to Cleveland State to close out its six-match homestand. First serve set for 11 a.m.
