CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois women's tennis team is set to open Missouri Valley Conference play when they host Evansville Wednesday at University Courts. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
The Salukis and Aces met last season when Southern easily defeated UE in Evansville, 6-1.
The Salukis are coming off a 6-1 loss to No. 52 ranked Illinois, which snapped its previous 10-match winning streak. Gisela Cairo Baza scored the lone point for SIU when she defeated Emily Barretta at the No. 6 spot with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 1-0.
Much of the Salukis' success has come from freshmen this season. The three freshmen on the roster have combined for 17 win's in singles action this season, including five wins at the No. 2 position by Meagan Monaghan. Most surprising has been Polina Dozortseva who is 9-4 this spring and has won seven of her last 10 matches.
