FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Saluki women's tennis team fell 6-0 to No. 24 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon to conclude its three-match weekend. SIU is now 1-4 this season.
Natasha Tomishima and Athena Chrysanthou faced strong Oklahoma competitors, ending the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches in shut outs.
Meagan Monaghan and Gisela Cairo Baza at No. 2 and No. 6, however, each won sets to push their matches to a third, tiebreaker set before falling to OU. Ariadna Cairo Baza also put up a fight, falling in the first set, but coming close in the second before slipping away, 6-4.
"Kudos to Meagan, Gisela and Ari for really battling," head coach Audra Anderson said. "There was a point in the match where we really had a chance to take three singles courts."
Doubles were not played in Saturday's match.
The Salukis end the weekend with three consecutive losses, two of which came to nationally ranked schools. According to Anderson, however, this was a learning weekend.
"We took a lot out of the weekend, both good and bad," she said. Now we have some time before our next matches to really work on these things."
SIU has a three-week break in competition before returning to the court to face Central Arkansas on Saturday, Feb. 14.
