CARBONDALE, Ill. – After starting the season with two tournaments on the road, the Saluki women's tennis team returned to University Courts on Saturday to host the Saluki Invite. The Salukis took on players from Eastern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville and Arkansas State, finishing with nine wins and 14 losses overall.
"The one day tournament provides a lot of tennis in a small amount of time, so you have to forget the losses quickly and try to ride the momentum of the wins into your next match," head coach Audra Anderson said.
SIU's newcomers finished their first meet as Salukis in impressive fashion, with junior Ana Sofia Cordero and freshman Katie Fries each earning key wins.
In singles, Cordero earned the most wins for the Salukis with a top finish at the No. 4 singles spot. In the opening round, Cordero topped SIU-Edwardsville's Sierra Halverson, 6-1, 6-3, and was able to follow that with another win over Eastern Illinois's Hannah Kimbrough, 6-5, 6-3, in the second.
Junior Meagan Monaghan and freshman Elisabeth Parr were the only other two Salukis to finish with wins in the first round of singles play at the No. 1 and No. 7 spots, respectively. Both fell in their second-round matches. Sophomore Athena Chrysanthou and freshman Katie Fries, on the other hand, dropped their opening matches, but rallied back for wins in the second round at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Fries came out strong in No. 3 doubles with partner sophomore Yana Golovkina, who had great success in doubles last year with SIU's best doubles record in conference play. The two came together on Saturday for a pair of 6-3 wins over teams from SIU-Edwardsville and Arkansas State to take the No. 3 doubles win.
Elisabeth Parr and Caroline Taty, both freshmen, had the only other doubles win for the Salukis, with a 6-3 win in the second round of the No. 4 doubles flight.
"We saw some great tennis from our Number 3 doubles team and Sofia in singles, and a lot of our other Salukis had some very close losses in singles, but we've just got to find a way to play under pressure a little bit better," Anderson said.
The Salukis will have a quick turnaround this week as they'll head to Oklahoma to compete in the ITA Regional Championships beginning Thursday.
