Salukis close out ITA Central Regional against tough competitors

STILLWATER, Okla. – The SIU women's tennis team's run at the ITA Central Regional tournament came to an end on Friday as the Salukis fell in tough losses to competitors from highly ranked teams.
"It's just kind of the luck of the draw down there for who you get in the first round and who you beat in what round," head coach Audra Anderson said. "There are a lot of ranked teams and they have good players and we were able to come out pretty strong against them."
Freshman Katie Fries had a tight match against conference opponent Rebecca Pedrazzi from Wichita State. Pedrazzi was the Shockers' No. 3 player last season and has played as high as No. 1 in her career. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Fries rallied back in the second frame to top Pedrazzi 6-1. Ultimately, Fries fell 6-0 in the deciding set to conclude the match.
"That was a great match because that girl was tough and Katie did really well against her. Anything over Wichita is great," Anderson said.
Sophomore Athena Chrysanthou and junior Ana Sofia Cordero each fell against competitors from Oklahoma and Nebraska, respectively. Oklahoma finished last season ranked No. 35 by the ITA.
SIU's top player Meagan Monaghan played in a consolation match, coming away with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Drake's Summer Brills.
"We had some close matches and I think we really held our own down there," Anderson said. "These girls are our top four players and they could be in any order. They're playing very well."
The Salukis will take a few weeks off before competing in their final tournament of the fall season on Nov. 6 at the Redwolves Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.
