Salukis drop match against Murray State, 5-2

KENLAKE, Ky. - Despite strong performances across the board, the SIU women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to a strong Murray State team on Sunday. The Salukis now move to 1-5 on the season.
Natasha Tomishima put up a fight at the No. 1 singles spot, rallying back after a first set loss to take the second 5-2 before falling 6-4 in the third, deciding set.
Freshman Vitoria Beirao played a successful match, however, topping her opponent (7-6, 6-4) at the No. 6 position. SIU struggled to top the Racers in singles aside from Beirao's win.
Doubles were a different story, however, as the Salukis came away with wins in two matches, the third left unfinished. Natasha Tomishima and Meagan Monaghan won their 11th match as a pair, topping their opponents, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot. Yana Golovkina and Ariadna Cairo Baza also picked up a win, 7-5, at the No. 3 position.
"We started well and finished well, but Murray State was too tough for us today," head coach Audra Anderson said. "We're still lacking some key elements in our game that we need in order to win big matches."
The Salukis will look to rebound on Friday as they return home to face SIU-Edwardsville to start an eight-match home stand.
