Salukis finish with impressive 6-1 win over Austin Peay

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Saluki women's tennis team played a strong match on Friday night, coming away with an impressive 6-1 win over Austin Peay. With their second-straight win, the Salukis are now 3-6 on the season and undefeated at home.
SIU took the doubles point behind strong performances at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, as the No. 1 match went unfinished. Vitoria Beirao and Polina Dozortseva topped their opponents, 6-4, at the No. 2 position, while Ariadna Cairo Baza and Yana Golovkina won 6-1 in the No. 3 slot.
The Salukis went on to win five-of-six singles matches to earn the win over the Governors. In the top three positions, Natasha Tomishima, Meagan Monaghan and Yana Golovkina stumped their competitors, each only allowing Austin Peay's players two points over the course of their matches.
In the fourth, fifth and sixth positions, the players only played one set to eight points. Athena Chrysanthou controlled her match from the beginning, topping her opponent, 8-1, at the No. 5 position. Ariadna Cairo Baza followed suit, coming away with an 8-3 victory at the No. 6 spot.
The No. 4 slot brought more of a challenge, however. Vitoria Beirao led for much of the match, but a tough comeback brought the score to a 7-7 tie. After back-to-back points, Beirao fell in the tiebreaker, falling 7-8 overall.
"The team came out ready to go and really took care of business," assistant coach Michaela Bezdickova said. "We just need to get a good rest tonight and get ready for a good NIU team tomorrow."
The Salukis play an early match tomorrow morning, facing Northern Illinois at 9 a.m. The Huskies (8-0) moved into the national rankings earlier this week and are currently ranked 74th in the ITA NCAA Division I Women's Team Rankings.
