ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior Natasha Tomishima secured the eighth-straight win for the Salukis on Friday with a high-pressure three-set No. 1 singles match. It all came down to a third-set tie breaker victory for Tomishima to earn the fourth, deciding point for SIU over Western Kentucky.
Tomishima split the first two sets, winning the first and losing the second, before moving to a third and final set. Tomishima and WKU's Emilia Granstrom hung tight through the last frame, pushing the set to 6-6. Battling through a cramped forearm, Tomishima earned the tiebreaker point to clinch the set, match and win for the Salukis. Saturday's win marks the fourth-straight singles win for Tomishima.
This week's recognition marks the second time the senior has earned MVC Player of the Week honors, after coming away with Player of the Week in 2013.
The Salukis, 9-6, open conference play tomorrow at Evansville. Match time is 2 p.m.
