DES MOINES, Iowa - It was a tough loss for the Salukis on Saturday, as SIU fell 7-0 to Drake University. This marks SIU's second straight loss following the team's record-breaking 12-match win streak. The Salukis are now 13-8 on the season and 2-2 in MVC play.
"Drake played solid and was just better than us today," head coach Audra Anderson said. "We have to have everyone show up mentally to beat this team, and that didn't happen today."
The Salukis fell behind at the onset of the match, with only one win in doubles by Ariadna Cairo Baza and Yana Golovkina at the No. 3 spot, giving Drake a 1-0 advantage. Cairo Baza and Golovkina's tiebreaker 8-7 (8-6) victory was SIU's only win of the day.
Drake's momentum continued into singles play as the first three matches off the courts were two-sets defeats at the No. 5, No. 2 and No. 4 singles spots by Vitoria Beirao, Meagan Monaghan and Yana Golovkina, respectively.
At the No. 1 spot, Natasha Tomishima pushed the first set to a tiebreaker, but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-3) before falling in the second set to drop the match. Athena Chrysanthou and Ariadna Cairo Baza played strong, both clinching first-set wins, but were both unable to close out their matches, finishing play for the Salukis.
"We've got to regroup and refocus for tomorrow," Anderson said.
SIU will take on Northern Iowa tomorrow in Cedar Falls at 10 a.m.
