EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Salukis concluded their season today with a 4-0 loss to Wichita State in the semifinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference team championships. SIU ended the season with a 16-10 record overall, 5-4 in conference play.
"When you play a team like Wichita State you just have to go for it," head coach Audra Anderson said. "We did that, but they were just better than us today."
The Shockers got off to a quick start, topping SIU in doubles at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to take the doubles point. Ariadna Cairo Baza and Yana Golovkina, SIU's All-Conference No. 3 pair, finished the season with a 6-2 record in conference play with their only losses against Wichita State.
SIU continued to slip to Wichita State in singles play, with quick losses at the No. 4, 5 and 6 positions. The Salukis fell in each set, scoring no more than one point each.
The Salukis started the season with consecutive losses for a 1-6 record on the road, but bounced back with a record-breaking 12-match win streak at home midway through the season. Conference play challenged SIU's momentum with tough losses against Wichita State, Drake and Northern Iowa. The Salukis were able to top Evansville, Missouri State, Bradley and Illinois State.
"Overall we had a good year, but not a great year. We feel we can do much better next year," Anderson said.
