Albuquerque, N.M. -
The women's tennis team lost a tough match against the nationally ranked University of New Mexico to start its weekend. The Salukis fell 7-0 to the Lobos, who rank No. 63 in the country.
The match started out neck and neck, as each school was able to win a doubles match. The Lobos won the first doubles match, 6-0, while the No. 2 squad of Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao for SIU won their match, 6-2. The Salukis would end up losing the doubles point in the No. 3 spot, however, as Athena Chrysanthou and Yana Golovkina almost edged out a victory before falling 6-4.
In singles play the Salukis struggled, not winning a single match. All six Salukis fell in two straight sets. Coach Audra Anderson was content with how her team played despite the loss.
"This was a great match today that the overall score did not reflect," said Anderson. "The matchups were very even throughout, with the exception of the No. 1 doubles. The difference today was not ability, the difference was in our belief."
This is also the first time the team has been shut out by a non-conference opponent since their 6-0 loss to Oklahoma over a year ago. The loss moves the Salukis' record to 1-2 on the year.
SIU takes on Northern Arizona tomorrow at 10 a.m., the first meeting ever between the two teams.
