Albuquerque, N.M. – The women's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker today, losing 4-3 in their first ever meeting with Northern Arizona University.
Sunday's match started just like Saturday's against the University of New Mexico, with both teams earning wins in doubles play. The deciding doubles match would lean toward Northern Arizona, as the Lumberjacks were able to defeat Meagan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao, 7-5, at the No. 2 spot. The lone doubles win for the Salukis was a 6-2 victory for Athena Chrysanthou and Yana Golovkina in the No. 3 match.
The Salukis trailed 1-0 after doubles play and responded quickly winning three singles matches in a row. Two set victories for Polina Dozortseva, Ana Sofia Cordero, and Athena Chrysanthou, gave the Salukis a 3-1 lead over NAU with three matches to go. The last three matches favored the Lumberjacks, however, with two of the three matches being decided in three sets.
"We had it on our racquet in doubles and singles, and lost it," head coach Audra Anderson said. "We have to learn to go for it more when we are under pressure and play big. We will learn from this experience and it will benefit us in future matches."
The Salukis went 0-2 on the weekend, and move to 1-3 on the season. The team will have a small break before its next match, before the Salukis face Ball State on Feb. 13.
