MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis team has completed their first round of both doubles and singles at the ITA central regional championships with one doubles win.
On the first day of competition all four Salukis took a loss in singles play. Both Athena Chrysanthou and Ana Sofia Cordero lost in straight sets to top 25 players from the University of Oklahama. Xiwei Cai had the earliest match of all the dawgs yesterday when she took on Maria Espindola of Iowa State. Cai put up a good fight, but Espindola was too much winning 6-2, 6-1. Meagan Monaghan was SIU's last chance to win in singles play in day one. The junior took on No. 5 seed Mimi Fotopoulos and lost 6-0, 6-3. This is the first tournament this season where SIU was unable to pick up at least one win in the opening round.
At the beginning of day two the Salukis quickly turned things around. Doubles duo Monaghan and Chrysanthou, took to the court and took down South Dakota State, 8-3. This is the first time the two have played together since last season, and their first win as doubles a pair in over a year. The momentum would run out quickly as Cordero and Cai were defeated by top ten-ranked University of Missouri, 8-3.
All four Salukis will be in action later today in the consolation bracket in singles. For a complete look at the bracket and to see all the results click here.
