CHAMPAIGN, ILL. – The women's swimming and diving team will be back in action this weekend, squaring off with the University of Illinois and Illinois State in a three-way dual.
This is the third straight year that Southern Illinois University has faced off against the two instate schools. Last season the dawgs lost to Illinois in a close one, 134-166, but quickly bounced back to defeat conference foe ISU, 200-96.
"This is a great chance for us to get a good look at two of the four strongest teams in the state," SIU head coach Rick Walker said. "We just want to get in there and compete well, with the focus being on us. We need to worry about we do. I think that's one of the reasons why we did well last year, which helped us succeed. We didn't get held up on the outside stuff."
SIU controls the all time series with Illinois State, winning three of the five meetings, including last year's dominant 104-point victory. The dawgs have not had as much success against the Fighting Illini, winning only once in 15 meetings.
This will be the third meet of the year for the women's swimming and diving team. After two meets the squad has cracked the top 100 fastest times in the nation in nearly every event, with over half of their times being inside the top 50 fastest in the country. The first meet against Evansville marked the 18th win in 19 meetings against the Purple Aces. SIU then followed up with a fourth place finish at the first ever Missouri State Invitational, defeating three of the four MVC teams competing in the event.
"This group is in the zone. When you're in the zone great things happen. And I'm not talking about the comfort zone, nothing great happens inside the comfort zone. This group is pushing the limit, expanding that comfort zone, and are building up to be something special."
Saturday's meet will begin at 12 p.m. at the ARC Pool on Illinois' campus. For live updates follow SIU swimming and diving on twitter at @SIU_SwimDive.
