SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Southern Illinois University women's swimming team will be taking nine athletes to the first ever Missouri State Invitational this Saturday. There will be many Missouri Valley Conference teams represented, including Northern Iowa, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Illinois State. Joining the valley teams will be two teams from Texas, the University of Houston and Rice University.
The invitational will feature two sessions, starting with relays and ending with relays. Each team will consist of only nine swimmers, and every type of stroke will be featured in each session.
"In many ways I think this weekend will be more intense than a conference championship," SIU head coach Rick Walker said. "It'll be like a feeding frenzy for a brief period of time. For me, I'm excited to see how our group handles this environment."
The nine athletes competing are seniors Sarah James and Lauren Stockton, juniors Bryn Handley, Chandler Ott, and Kelsie Walker, sophomores Emma Brazeau and Jordan Ries, and freshmen Samantha Parsons and Laura Carver. This will be the second meet for all nine Salukis this season. Each swimmer was apart of a first or second place finishing relay team this past weekend at Evansville.
"When it came to selecting the nine we went with the best athletes we had in each event as of right now. And you can't go two girls per stroke, because you have to make up relays with the swimmers you're taking. So, this lineup is a little more freestyle heavy, but we'll still be very competitive in each event. It's a good group of girls going," Walker said.
Session one will begin at 10 a.m. and session two will approximately start at 4 p.m. The complete schedule is listed below.
Session 1 – 10 a.m.
400 Medley Relay
