EVANSVILLE, IND. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program will travel to Indiana this weekend for the Missouri Valley Individual Championships. The three-day tournament will feature all eight-valley teams.
The tournament will begin with the first round of doubles and then be followed by the first round of singles. There will be a total of ten championships titles ups for grabs.
"It's not going to be easy, but we got very good seeds this year," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Our players all got a 1 or a 2 seed in each bracket because of how we finished last season. It really gives us good positioning to make a run for each title."
The Salukis will have nine players compete in the tournament this year. To prepare the team has moved their focus from conditioning this week in practice and turned their attention to being fully rested and mentally ready.
"It's all about preparation and doing what you have to do. We've been bringing them quotes every day to help with their attitude also. We keep telling all our players that they have all the shots and they just have to take the match as it is and build off of what's going on and learn from it," Anderson said.
Anderson tells us that the message written in the locker room all week was "attitude dictates success," and the mental aspect of each player's game is what will help them be successful this weekend. Last time around the Salukis sent five singles players to the semifinals and one doubles pair. Of those five that advanced last year three of them will be on the court this weekend, most notably Yana Golovkina, who won the No. 6 flight. In Anderson's tenure here at SIU the most titles she's won at the MVC Individual Championships has been two. This year, she tells us the goal is at least three.
The tournament will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. The full schedule is listed below and if you would like to follow along with each match, live stats can be found here.
