EVANSVILLE, IND. – The Southern Illinois University women's tennis program has a dominant performance on the first day of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships. SIU will have seven different players competing in the semifinals tomorrow in singles and three doubles pairs.
The Salukis started their momentum in doubles play, getting three of four teams to the next round. Pairs Meaghan Monaghan and Vitoria Beirao, Polina Dozortseva and Tereza Klocova, and Yana Golovkina and Athena Chrysanthou, will all compete tomorrow in the No. 2 and No. 3 bracket, respectively. The only pair that was in action today was the duo of Golovkina and Chrysanthou. The pair took down Drake's No. 3 pair, 8-2.
The wave of momentum transferred over to singles play as SIU will be well represented in the semis in multiple brackets. Ana Sofia Cordero, Meaghan Monaghan, Tereza Klocova, Polina Dozortseva, Victoria Beirao, Caroline Taty, and Yana Golovkina will all compete in their respective flights tomorrow, beginning after doubles play. Of the seven playing in the semis, two received a first round bye. Of the five that did not have a bye four of them won their match in straight sets.
"I told the girls to focus on the things they can control today," SIU head coach Audra Anderson said. "Control your energy, your effort and your attitude and the rest will come."
